Common questions

How is BMI calculated?
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. With imperial units the formula is 703 × weight in pounds ÷ height in inches squared. Both give the same result; this calculator accepts either unit system.
What are the standard BMI categories for adults?
Under CDC adult categories: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obesity. Categories for children and teens use age- and sex-specific percentiles instead of these fixed cutoffs.
What are BMI's limitations?
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is carried, so muscular athletes can read as overweight and older adults can read as healthy while carrying excess fat. It is a population screening tool — a clinician can interpret it alongside waist measurement and other factors.

Not medical advice. BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis — it does not directly measure body fat and can misclassify muscular or older adults. For an assessment of your health, talk to a clinician.
